The BREEAM Awards is an annual event that recognizes projects and organizations that according to the independent evaluation committee, lead the market with significant achievements in the design, development and management of sustainable buildings.
In the BREEAM Awards 2021 competition, the PENNY Otopeni project won the award for the most sustainable project in Central and Eastern Europe.
In 2020, PENNY Otopeni significantly reduced its electricity consumption as well as CO2 emissions:
- In 2020, the store consumed 18% less energy than a standard PENNY store.
- On the roof of the store are 120 photovoltaic panels, 55 solar tubes that bring natural and diffused light into the store, as well as about 1,000 square meters of grassy roof.
- Last year, the store in Otopeni produced 55,315 kWh through photovoltaic panels, which represented 21% of the total electricity consumed by it. In terms of environmental impact it means avoiding 74,549.25 kg of CO2 emissions.
PENNY Romania is part of the German REWE Group, with the first store opened on the local market in 2005. Currently the PENNY Market network in Romania consists of 280 stores nationwide and has 5,000 employees.
